WEEKLY DIGI-PICS

Saturday morning, Dick Tinder and I traveled to southwest Iowa to photograph traffic on the BNSF mainline.  The company didn't disappoint, as several warbonnets, oakways, and even the one-of-a-kind BNSF experimental scheme showed up.  We start out at Oceola, IA at 10AM...

Oceola, IA

Right away, Amtrak 185 arrived at the Oceola Depot.  This was much to Dick's surprise, as the train usually arrives before 9AM, and it was after ten.

A view of the conductor talking to one of the passengers that had been waiting there.  So far, the day was off to a good start.  Seen is AMTK 39043

After a bout with cattle on the RoW, EMD "Oakway" #9068 made its way westbound at Murray, IA.  The engineer evidently cowpokes in his days off.

West of Murray, BNSF 9892 was on the point of a DPU train heading eastbound.  Dick could tell by a noise made by the scanner that this was DPU

Another Oakway, this one 9003, was on the point of a train.  This time, it was traveling eastbound at Thayer, IA.

BNSF 9647, the experimental merger paint scheme, was on the front of an eastbound in Creston, IA.

Here's a side view of the unit.  Dick referred to the unit as the "barf-bonnet" engine.  A little harsh, but the unit WAS ugly.

After a new crew showed up for the eastbound 9647, it took off.  Note the solid green on the back of the varied warbonnet scheme.

Many units were in the yard, including these two rebuilt GP30s.  The yard crew would later run through a swich with them.

BNSF 9718 led this all cream and dark green consist westbound into the yard at Creston.  I've always thought this was a "classy" scheme.

Here, the coal train passes by the depot at Creston.  The station is now owned by the city, and the Amtrak station is just to the east.
