In October 1999, I started the website "The Chicago and NorthWestern in
Central Iowa" on the Simpson College Server. It was written using text messages in html code,
and had about a dozen or so low quality photo scans
using a very old photo scanner. Today, the site has evolved to having dozens of low quality digital photographs!! |

Before the web counter quit
working, over 25,000 people had visited the site. By 2000, the site
was moved with me to Iowa State. With the quick disappearance of CNW
locomotives, combined with the close proximity of the Iowa State Campus and
the availability of the UPRR trace, it became a hobby to run down the
remaining units as they passed through Boone and Ames and post the photos on
the site. |

Disappearing engines weren't the only things to get documented on the
site.... The selling of CNW GeePs at the old Transglobal shops, the closing
of Transglobal altogether, and the last runs on the Woodward branch were all
part of cnw-rail.com. And who can forget the last all-CNW consists
that would run on the new Marshalltown turn, MDMDM? |

The later days would bring UP specials with E units and steam engines,
and the occasional CNW leader as they could be found.
A special thanks go out to the following people for helping me 'railfan'
the old CNW, who made it possible for these photos to exist....
"Grandpa" John Endres, Jennifer Greubel, Ron and Ann Juergens, Chad
Crawford, Lee Kohler, Dick Tinder, Paul "waugy" Chleboun, Paul Duncan, John
Findley, Steve "Tex" Carnahan, Stewart Buck, and Dana Grefe
Also a special thanks to those who have contributed to the site and sent
in photographs. |
