Five Year Update
Some new photo scans from 1995-2000, and new photos from this month
2sd60sboone.jpg Two "we will deliver" SD60's (both former CNW and both now retired) pull up side-by-side at Boone, IA
ankeny-sub.jpg An engineer took a photo of this 19 car local heading to Slater, IA in 2001
bell-yd.jpg A very dated look at Bell Avenue Yard, used for long term storage
boone-office.jpg UP demolished the old CNW yard office in this photo last year. This was located in the lot at the yard.
cnw1307-dodge.jpg A CNW MP15 works the now abandoned elevator on the south end of the Ft. Dodge Industrial lead at Des Moines, IA
cnw1307-dodgeb.jpg With cars in hand, the CNW 1307 pulls down to the south end of the Ft. Dodge at Dean Ave.
cnw4323.jpg CNW 4323 was in the old Marshalltown shops in 2001. By then Transglobal had taken over.
cnw4602.jpg Operation Lifesaver was on this CNW GP38-2 in Des Moines.
cnw4607.jpg 4607 was one on the other rare 4600s to wear the OLS scheme
cnw4706.jpg 4706 sits with the other assigned Boone CNW power.
cnw4710.jpg 4710 is at Des Moines. Normally, this engine could be found a Boone..
cnw4711.jpg 4711 was typically assigned to Clinton, so it was rare to catch it at Boone.
cnw5517.jpg In this old rescan, an impressive lashup of four CNW GP40s fuel after a run up the Oskie.
cnw6633.jpg This rescan came out beautifully, as two newly repainted SD18s wait under the overpasss at Marshalltown.
cnw6878.jpg CNW 6878 leads a northbound past Hull Avenue in Des Moines. This unit was the first, UP 3043, to wear a "patch" and is still in cnw paint today.
cnw7027.jpg In a classic scene at Boone, a westbound stacker with CNW 7027 in the lead passes by the MPRCB, while an antique GP7 pulls up to the right.
cnw7029.jpg Okay, so the sun was on the wrong side... CNW 7029 speeds through Boone in this re-scan of one of the first photographs I ever took in Boone.
cnw8502.jpg This re-scan was taken on the same day. The clouds have come out, making the photo even less quality. CNW 8502 had wreck damage, as seen by the dents on the front, making it the only CNW C40-8 without a logo on the nose.
cnw8706.jpg The first time I met Tim Kilbride was when this CNW dash 9 buzzed through Caroll.
cnw8828-valley.jpg Fast Forward to 2004, where the CNW 8828 is on the Council Bluffs local at Valley, Nebraska staging itself for an eastbound grain train.
cnw8828b.jpg The local has cut the unit away from a handful of potash cars at Valley.
cnw8828c.jpg One last shot of one of only ten remaining CNW units on the railroad in 2004
damnstreetlight.jpg 84th Street in Omaha offers a scenic high bridge for photos.... that is, unless you neglect to shoot around the street lights.
desmxing.jpg This amazing relic was still standing in downtown Des Moines in 1999. This entire area has been completely re-developed, but not so long ago, you could still find this railroad crossbuck, with striped pole and wide sign that was left over from the age of steam. This was on the old M&St.L line in downtown.
eaglegrove-sp.jpg An SP SD40 or 45 leads a grain train past the semaphore at Eagle Grove.
indianola-6th.jpg Sixth street in Indianola was another place where you could sit and watch the crews switch out grain trains. The two tank cars at the right were the last business in town before the abandonment. Also, note the antique "wide" style crossbucks on the left side of the road, to the right of the tank cars.
indianola-spur.jpg Just before the line closed, I caught this track inspection "EC 2" coming off the Indianola branch. The sign at right, for the Industrial Spur, is long gone.
indianola-switch.jpg These switch stands can't be found in too many places any more. I know of a couple still on the Boone and Scenic Valley. This was between 6th St. and Euclid at the crossover to switch Laverty Elevator at Indianola, IA.
milw1305.jpg Transglobal actually recruited some MILW power before it closed shop. On the west end of the shops, this old CMSP&P switcher awaited its turn for an overhaul
up1008.jpg This is a rescan of one of the first trains I caught on the Woodward line after I started going to college at Iowa State. Location is Madrid, IA.
up689b.jpg The last train I caught at Bell Avenue was this old CNW GP40, which was switching out old bad order hopper cars at Bell Yard.
