 Photo of the Month: Nicely placed CNW 8821 and 8820 haul a unit coal train westbound at Devil's Hollow on the late date of December 29th, 2002.   Its hard to believe that, with over 90% of the 1995 CNW fleet gone, that numerical lashups like this are still possible.

DECEMBER 2002

 Photo of the Month: One of the last executive units left in CNW paint near Warsaw, IL in November, 2002.   The CNW actually retired this unit long before the UP merger, but left the engine on the property.  Meanwhile, a "new" CNW 400 took its place on the executive fleet, which remained on the roster into 1995.  The UP would later sell the unit to Pioneer Railroad Corp.  But, in the same time frame, they also sold the second CNW 400 to the Wisconsin Great Northern.  Since both units would be en route on the UP system at the same time, the older of the two would simply be renumbered to "CNW 40"

In September 2002, CNW 8806 leads a coal train out of a heavy rain storm at Nevada, IA.  Somehow, the light found its way to the front of the engine, despite the dark clouds and stormy weather.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH: MAY 2001- AUGUST 1999
MAY 2001 A CNW SD40-2 crosses a wooden trestle northbound on the Jewell Sub. The northbound grain train was photographed by Paul Duncan in 1999.
APRIL 2001 Jim Sands caught this CNW SD45 unique "dynamic brakeless" unit westbound near Marshalltown in 1977. Look at those rotting ties and uneven ballast!
MARCH 2001 A solid CNW consist was eastbound at Minnesota Avenue, with the very last SD60 in Northwestern colors in tow in the Council Bluffs-Proviso run in Ames Iowa in March 2001.
FEBRUARY 2001 A northbound local "switch run" heads up the Ames branch with Fertilizer headed by Chicago and Northwestern MP15 number 1311. February 2001 photo.

DECEMBER 2000 Operation Lifesaver AC4400 was eastbound with coal at the Highway 25 overpass in Scranton, IA on January 3rd. On the other side of the bridge, a local grain extra was working the elevator.
NOVEMBER 2000 CNW 6819 and CNW 6584 sandwich a SOO GP40 in a pre-merger flashback of a consist in Hull Yard at Des Moines.  The consist graced the PRDM train
OCTOBER 2000 A Union Pacific GeeP crosses the former Milwaukee Road High Bridge between Madrid and Woodward in October of 1999 on a hazy afternoon. The photograph was taken by Bill Findley with a really nice zoom. The conductor also came out to pose for the occasion. (By the way, this was the only UP photo to EVER make PoM!)

APRIL 2000 West of Boone, Iowa, C44-9 #8680 was eastbound at Sunset with part of its mixed freight still on the Kate Shelley Bridge. Photo taken at the same location as #6930 below.
MARCH 2000 On a recent trip to Bell Avenue Yard, GP38-2 #4633 ran a transfer from Bell to Hull Yard on the old Chicago Great Western Des Moines River Bridge just south of Downtown. This line used to be the Kansas City Main, now it is on the verge of abandonment.
FEBRUARY 2000 At 10:00pm on a cold December night on the way back from a basketball game in Scranton, we caught GP38-2 #4706 idling under a streetlight in the yard.

DECEMBER 1999 Chicago and Northwestern's famous executive F7 fleet leads a circus train through an Illinois town in 1982, with #403 at the helm. As of this date no former CNW F7's are rostered with Union Pacific. Big Thanks out to LOREN KARR for this postcard scan.
NOVEMBER 1999 At Hull Avenue Yard, GP38-2 #4630 idles in the flood-prone wye to the former Ames Mainline. Water gets high in this location every time it rains.

Prior to October 1999, "Photo of the Month" was not a feature on the site.  Originally, the site consisted of five pages; a "home page," and four "archive" pages.  (Indianola, Scranton, Boone, and Marshalltown.... Ames, Des Moines, and Carlisle would be added later)  Short excursions would follow, along with "Photo of the Month"  The site originally went online in the fall of 1998.
