NOTES |
| Jennifer and I set out on May 31 to find three engines that were due in at Short Line Yard: UP 3300, UP 9089, and CNW 6858 which had come in on PRDM. On the way down, we heard the dispatcher talk to a train at the BN, and we figured this was the train with the "United Way" engine on it. | |
| We were right, but unfortunately UP 3300 in its red-white and blue paint was the second unit of two in the consist. It was pulling a rail train bound for Pekin, IL. | |
| Here is the train as it crosses Short Line Jct. CSX 5945 led the train over the diamond, which had welded rail set aside ready to be installed. Do I see high speed IAIS trains in the future? | |
| The rail train headed north past Dean Avenue without entering the yard. Here is a last look at the front of UP 3300. | |
| The patched "Safety and Reliability" engine was sitting at the engine terminals, most likely the power for MKSIT. | |
| CNW 6858 | Jennifer and I headed up to Arby's at the top of the hill for lunch after seeing the Safety/Reliability engine. When we came back, one of the yard jobs were getting ready to turn all of the engines at the terminal, eight all together. Here is a remote control unit turning CNW 6858 and the other seven. |
| IC 6001 | IC 6001 and CNW 6858 were the sole power of the day's MDMPR. Here is the IC 6001 getting turned. |
| Short Line Power | Here is a shot of the three exotic engines in the eight unit consist, including CNW 6858, IC 6001, with a UP wide cab thrown in, and UP 9089. They are rounding the north leg. |
| IC 6122 & UP9599 | The next day, on my way back home from working jobs seven and eight on the Boone and Scenic Valley, I stopped into Des Moines to check out the trains. I was surprised to find this all-IC consist parked next to UP 9599, a flag unit. |
| IC 6122 & IC 6135 | The yard was packed as the all-IC consist left the yard with MDMSS in tow. On the left is job 06, and on the right is MDMKC. |
| IC 6122 at Euclid | I caught them again up past the bean plant at the Euclid Avenue overpass. This is, in my opinion, the best place to catch north bounds in Des Moines. The best place to catch southbounds, of course, is Guthrie Ave. bridge. |
| CNW Ft. Dodge sign w/IC consist approaching | The train was red signaled at Broadway, so I got another shot of it with this CNW "Begin Ft. Dodge" sign in the foreground. Too bad the logo is so faded! |
| IC 6122 & 6135 | Here are the two northbound Illinois Central units one last time waiting for the signal at Broadway. |
| UP 9599 | Back at the yard, MDMKC got its warrant to proceed south on the Spine Line. It was led by this UP flag unit. |
