NorthWestern engines leading trains through Ames, Boone & on the Spine
BOONE
Lee Koehler and I caught this AC4400 leading a westbound train just east of Boone parallel to old Hwy 30.
Just a day earlier, Chad Crawford and I set out to catch this CNW 8832. The dispatcher announced it as "UP 8832"
This UP "flag unit" was idle on the west end of the Boone Yard on April 20. Note the Southern Pacific "patch job" behind it.
Here is the 8801 again at the overpass by Kate Shelley bridge.
CNW 8832 has just crossed Marion Street and makes its way eastbound in Boone.
A pair of WC units were in Boone in late March. Here is WC 7518 idling with a CNW 'patcher' in the yard.
The second unit was sandwiched between a couple of ugly UP units. Here is WC 7606, an SD45.
AMES, IA
Chicago and NorthWestern 8803 led this westbound coal empty through Ames Yard
NEVADA/ SPINE LINE
CNW 6871 leads an SSDM train under the east-west mainline at Devil's Hollow
At the Des Moines sand towers, CNW 6930 idles with threatening clouds on the horizon. Believe it or not, this photo was taken at 11:15AM!
6871 crosses Kansas City Junction- South. Some heavy exhaust was pluming from the stacks on this unit.
Streetlights reflect off the water on the ground, as a spring thunderstorm rains down on CNW 6930. CNW 6930 and 4614 are the only standard cab CNW engines left with Operation Lifesaver heralds.
