NOTES |
| I only have a few photos from my Chicago trip due to the fact that the memory card somehow fell out of my pocket somewhere between Clinton and Ankeny. On the way out of town, I caught this CNW C40-8 headed toward Proviso. | |
| This is the worse of two photos I took of the very rare SP 8013, but of course the crappy one is the one that would survive my stupidity! Anyway, here is the GE in the shops at Proviso diesel. | |
| On the desk of the shop superintendent at Proviso was a little note that said "scrap WP ???? and CNW 6930." It shouldn't be too long before 6930 meets the torch. Here is a shot of the front of it, taken with permission. | |
| All the days were sunny in Chicago except the day that I had the whole time to take photos! Here is the old coaling tower located right on the mainline. The local ducks down the Peoria branch to clear the main for a G1G3 transfer that was hot on its trail. | |
| Dekalb | The G1G3 transfer speeds down the middle of a busy intersection in downtown DeKalb. The train was traveling between 40 and 50 mph right down the middle of the intercection! |
| MILW 760 | This old Milwauke FM switcher was outside the IRM outside of Chicago. Unfortunately, they weren't open, so I wasn't able to photograph their F unit fleet.... |
| CN Train | On the way north on I-35, cars were moving under the bridge on the IC main! So, I pulled over and drove to the next county road to catch this westbound CN train on the old IC Omaha line. |
| SOO 6032 | MKSIT pulls up to a coal train in Mason City. SOO and CP power makes it to this train from the southbound auto train in Kansas City. |
| S St Paul: CNW 6858 | CNW 6858 led an MDMSS up to St. Paul. Here is the power at the sand towers. |
| CNW 6858 | A side shot of CNW 6858. In this update, I was lucky enough to catch 100% of the remaining CNW SD40-2 fleet. |
| UP 9813: another patch | Near CNW 6858 idled another patched CNW C44-9. This one had been renumbered to 9813. |
| ""AAAFLAK!"! | Some wildlife admires the company of two CNW-painted engines at the fuel and ready tracks at South St. Paul. |
| UP 9813 | Another look at the CNW patch, UP 9813. This one had no UP reporting marks. |
| Boone: CNW 8819 | CNW 8819 was DPU power for a coal train at Boone. Here it is idling near the makeshift UP yard office. |
| Minneapolis: Milwaukee Artifacts | The Milwaukee Road still lives in Minneapolis. The old depot has been converted to an upscale motel, and the old clocktower still bears the MILW heritage. |
| SOO 4598 | These engines looked cool at Valley park with back-to back numbers and bright red paint. |
| CNW caboose | A CNW waycar is on the end of a yard transfer at Hoffman Avenue Yard. This caboose is the local crummy that rusts away on a yard track most of the time. |
| Duluth | Here's a broad view of Duluth from the interstate. I had lots of business type work while visiting and couldn't take too many pictures. Anyway, if you ever have some time off, I highly recommend making it up here and taking lots of film with you! |
| RG Patch | At the yard in Itasca, this Rio Grande patch idled on some power that's ready to depart on MITKC. |
| UP 401 | Job 75 switches out the old CGW State Street Yard near Robert Street. They would have to switch out south Concord industries after finishing here. |
| WC 7520 | A lone WC SD45 leads a coke train toward the Roseport refinery. This is the same IC unit train that came down last week. The train is usually brought up with a SOO caboose. (see last update) |
| WC 7520 | After Job 85 got out of the way, the WC led coke train headed southward into the old CGW yard at Roseport. |
| CNW 6871 | A look at Job 85 coming back to St. Paul from Roseport. I'm saving the close up shot for "Photo of the Month" |
| Rock Island Artifacts | Inver Grove was once a hot spot on the Rock Island. Here are some artifacts to go with the Milwaukee shots above. The abandoned wye to the old swing bridge is still in place, but looks a lot like the old Ft. Dodge college lead I took a couple years ago in Ames! |
| Rock Island Artifacts | The old bridge was "double deck" with a county highway on the lower level and the Rock on the upper level. As you can see, the highway and bridge shanty are just as abandoned as the railroad tracks. |
| Rock Island Artifacts | This old Rock Island yard sign shows the bankruptcy logo. Interestingly, nobody was interested in purchasing the yard. No doubt the UP would have loved to operate out of Inver Grove instead of South St. Paul today, with the longer tracks and better layout. |
| twilight from the cab | A view of Dayton's bluff from the cab. You don't catch too many "UP meets" out on this CP/BNSF racetrack. |
| LAST UPDATE | Trip to Boone to see the BSV's new (sort of) CNW FP9 |
